Not all kitchen islands are the same project. A standalone prep island on casters is a furniture purchase. A fixed island built to the same height and finish as your base cabinets — with a waterfall countertop, seating overhang, and electrical outlets — is a construction project.
We handle the construction end: custom-built islands matched to your existing cabinetry, plumbed for a prep sink if needed, wired for outlets or under-cabinet lighting, and finished to coordinate with the rest of the kitchen.
Layout and clearance planning
Kitchen island placement is not just an aesthetic decision. Code requires minimum clearance on all working sides — typically 42 inches for single-cook kitchens, 48 for multi-cook. Islands also affect traffic flow through the kitchen, the location of overhead ventilation for cooktop islands, and the distance to the refrigerator and sink.
We plan island placement around all of those factors before anything gets built. A poorly placed island makes a kitchen worse. A well-placed one makes it work.
Seating-built islands
If your island includes seating, the design has to account for the overhang depth — typically 12–15 inches for standard stool height — the counter height (standard 36 inches or raised bar height at 42 inches), and the clearance for people sitting at it while others cook.
We build the base cabinet to the right height, select or fabricate the countertop overhang accordingly, and coordinate the seating selection if needed. The result is an island that seats people comfortably without blocking the working side.
Plumbing and electrical in islands
Adding a prep sink to an island means running a supply line and drain through the floor — a plumbing rough-in that has to be coordinated with the island footprint before the floor goes back down. Adding electrical means running conduit to the island and installing code-compliant GFCI outlets on the island face.
We handle both. We pull the permits, do the rough-in, and coordinate the inspection before the countertop and finish work go in. Any drain run to an island requires a permit in Orange County — do not let anyone tell you otherwise.
